Welkom in Mount Average. Julian Hetzel neemt ons mee op een rondleiding door een fabriek. Daar confronteert hij ons met onze ideologieën uit heden en verleden. Standbeelden van dictators en tirannen worden voor onze ogen afgeschuurd en tot pulp gemalen, om ze een zinvolle nieuwe invulling te geven. Een huiveringwekkende en hilarische rondleiding door ons verleden.

Mount Average stelt de verworven rechten, privileges, ideologieën en totalitaire ideeën in de postkoloniale maatschappij in vraag. De clash tussen verleden en heden zorgt voor frictie die stof doet opwaaien. Als toeschouwer wordt je medeplichtig gemaakt aan dit kunstwerk. “Als fabrieksbezoeker die hier wordt uitgedaagd mee te denken en mee te maken, is het vaak een kwestie van onzeker aftasten. Hoe beeld je de toekomst uit, hoe laat je angst zien, en gaandeweg stapelen de vragen zich nog op. Dat is meteen de kracht van deze mooi vormgegeven installatie: ze is nooit eenduidig of activistisch, maar roept keer op keer op tot reflectie. Met een oergeestige apotheose.” – Theaterkrant.

De Toneeljury noemt Hetzel “een unieke stem in het theaterlandschap”. Vorige jaar werd zijn voorstelling All Inclusive geselecteerd voor het festival, een confronterende performance letterlijk gebouwd op oorlogspuin uit Syrië. Hetzels performances zijn pogingen om de wereld te ontrafelen, terwijl hij strategieën probeert aan te reiken om ze te kunnen transformeren. De toekomst ligt in onze handen.

Mount Average questions the acquired rights, privileges, ideologies and totalitarian ideas in postcolonial society. The clash between past and present creates friction that stirs up dust. As a spectator you are made an accomplice to this work of art. “As a factory visitor who is challenged to think along and experience it, it is often a matter of uncertainly exploring. How do you portray the future, how do you show fear, and gradually the questions pile up. The Theater jury calls Hetzel “a unique voice in the theater landscape”. Last year his performance All Inclusive was selected for the festival, a confrontational performance literally built on war rubble from Syria. Hetzel’s performances are attempts to unravel the world, while trying to offer strategies for transforming it. The future is in our hands.
