The State of the World – Sahra Mani & Thomas Erdbrink

In het interviewprogramma The State of the World reflecteert een belangrijke buitenlandse kunstenaar op de rol van de kunsten en Nederland in de wereld. Onze gast dit jaar is de bekroonde Afghaanse filmmaker Sahra Mani. Onlangs ging haar documentaire Bread and Roses in premiere tijdens het Cannes Film Festival.

Bread and Roses geeft een krachtig beeld van de strijd van drie vrouwen in Afghanistan sinds de Taliban in 2021 opnieuw aan de macht is gekomen. Het is een rauwe, intieme weergave van hun schrijnende situatie waarin je de impact ziet van het verliezen van basisrechten.

Hollywoodster Jennifer Lawrence, producent van Bread and Roses: “You don’t see this side of the story, women fighting back, in the news every day and it’s an important part of our film, and the stories of these women.”

 Sahra Mani over the State of the World: “A huge problem is the lack of news in the Western media about the Afghan people under Taliban dictatorship and especially about the women’s situation. I would love doing this programme and we can hopefully bring Afghanistan back into the eyes of the public and policy makers.”

Sahra Mani wordt live geïnterviewd door Thomas Erdbrink. Jarenlang was Erdbrink correspondent in Teheran (Iran) voor verschillende media, waaronder NOS Journaal, The Washington Post en The New York Times. Voor zijn veelbekeken documentaireseries Onze Man in Teheran (2015, 2018) en Onze Man bij de Taliban (2023) mocht hij tweemaal de Zilveren Nipkowschijf ontvangen. 

Vorig jaar was The State of the World een gesprek met Pussy Riot-leider en activiste Maria Alyokhina.
