Performers Alexander Vantournhout en Axel Guérin tonen hun lichamen ontdaan van elke franje. Ze zijn getraind, maar niet perfect. Gaandeweg botsen hun atletische lichamen op fysieke grenzen en ontdekken ze de sterktes en zwaktes van hun eigen lichaam. Als virtuoze acrobaten spelen ze met proportie en fysieke kracht. De performers zoeken met inspanning en concentratie samen naar evenwicht. Ze dagen elkaar uit en helpen elkaar, ze leiden afwisselend de dans. Zonder daarbij de humor te schuwen! Een acrobatische ode aan de vriendschap tussen twee dansers.
Het Nederlands Theater Festival toont ook altijd een selectie van zijn Vlaamse tweelingbroer, het Vlaams TheaterFestival. Een van die voorstellingen is Through the Grapevine. “Alexander Vantournhout bevestigt zijn reputatie als weergaloze lichaamsmagiër”, schreef De Standaard.

Performers Alexander Vantournhout and Axel Guérin show their bodies, stripped of any frills. They are trained, but not perfect. Gradually, their athletic bodies encounter physical limits and they discover the strengths and weaknesses of their own bodies. As virtuoso acrobats, they play with proportion and physical strength. The performers search for balance with effort and concentration. They challenge and help each other, they alternately lead the dance. Without shying away from humor! An acrobatic ode to the friendship between two dancers.
The Dutch Theater Festival always shows a selection of its Flemish twin brother, the Flemish Theater Festival. One of those performances is Through the Grapevine. “Alexander Vantournhout confirms his reputation as an unparalleled body magician,” wrote De Standaard.

Omdat het evenwicht tussen het duo constant verschuift en het nooit duidelijk is wie de dans leidt, verdwijnt de machtsdynamiek, inherent aan een duet. Through the Grapevine is een pas de deux tussen twee lijven die elkaar feilloos vertrouwen en in balans houden, maar altijd geworteld blijven in zichzelf. Gelijkwaardigheidzonder gelijkheid dus. Dat is best utopisch om te zien.
Met Through the Grapevine bevestigt choreograaf Alexander Vantournhout zijn reputatie als weergaloze lichaamsmagiër.
De relatie tussen de performers is zo innig dat ze ondeelbaar lijken, als uitbreidingen van elkaar. Ze worden afwisselend, soms zelfs binnen één figuur, nu eens leider of opposant, steunpunt of ondersteunde. De concentratie en precisie die ze inzetten om die dat samenspel, in alle onderlinge verschillen, gaande te houden, houdt ons tot het einde van de voorstelling op het puntje van onze stoel.
Through the Grapevine toont tussen alle acrobatische bedrijven door bovenal de elastische maar ijzersterke vriendschapsband tussen twee mannen die competitie niet uit de weg gaan maar tederheid en zorgzaamheid evenzeer hoog in het vaandel dragen.
Choreograaf en circusartiest Alexander Vantournhout is al jaren bezig aan een internationale opmars, al blijft die in eigen land wat onder de radar. Met Through the Grapevine bevestigt hij dat de gelauwerde voorganger Screws (2019) geen toevalstreffer was. Vantournhouts hedendaagse bewegingsidioom, geïnjecteerd met een krachtige geut circustechniek, resulteert in een frisse en gelaagde danstaal.
